Side event at UNTOC COP10: Tackling Illicit Flows and Use of Ammunition

Organizers: Small Arms Survey and the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR)

This event will highlight the importance of accurately diagnosing the problem of illicit ammunition flows for effective policymaking and law enforcement. Indeed, international efforts to tackle trafficking in firearms tend to focus on the weapons and place less emphasis on the associated ammunition, in spite of the latter’s importance in enabling firearm-related crime and violence.

Presentations will focus on approaches for monitoring illicit flows and use of small-calibre ammunition, including new types of cooperation between research institutes, governments, and forensic departments for profiling and analysing recovered ammunition.

Panel:

  • Moderator: Emilia Dungel, Small Arms Survey
  • Manuel Martinez Miralles, UNIDIR
  • Leonardo Lara, UNODC
  • Miguel Bernard, Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine, Jamaica (pre-recorded)
  • Nicolas Florquin, Small Arms Survey
